Seeing Through Touch

Touching Images

2010

This work began with an encounter with a blind man who took photographs without ever visually seeing the images he created. This apparent contradiction became the starting point for exploring how an image can be translated between different modes of perception.
I transformed his photographs into tactile drawings using a raised dot system inspired by Braille, allowing him to experience his own images through touch. From this process, a dialogue emerged: he described his perceptions and memories from the moment each photograph was taken, while I translated the photographs into a tactile visual language. He then drew what he had perceived himself.
